China’s Long Arm, Part One

China is the world's most populous country. And it has one of the world's fastest-growing economies. In this BBC World Service series, we look at how this economic growth is being translated into military expansion.
PART 1

The BBC’s Maurice Walsh explores the increasing military rivalry between China and the U.S. For 60 years the U.S. Navy has had unchallenged control of the Pacific. But with a new generation of submarines, guided missile destroyers and aircraft, China is now developing modern, more capable armed forces. Beijing insists its army and navy pose no threat to peace. But Washington suspects China is acquiring new military muscle to project its influence. Walsh examines whether U.S. government concerns about rising defense spending in China will fuel a new arms race in the Pacific.
PART 2

Each year the Taiwanese naval, air and land forces hold widely publicised exercises to prepare for any attempted invasion from mainland China. The BBC’s Maurice Walsh considers whether China might use its growing military power to reclaim Taiwan, possibly provoking a confrontation between China and the United States.
