John Simpson Returns to China
Nineteen years ago, Tiananmen Square caught the world’s attention. This year, events and protests leading up to the Beijing Olympics are capturing the headlines. Veteran BBC broadcaster John Simpson witnessed the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. He hasn’t been allowed to travel there since. But now he’s finally able to return to China, and he finds a very different nation that the one he last saw.
First Half
John Simpson, the BBC World Affairs Editor, speaks with student activists who were imprisoned after the Tiananmen Square massacre. He also reflects on why he got it so wrong when he, along with much of the Western media, predicted regime change two decades ago.
Second Half
John Simpson meets the woman often called China's version of Oprah Winfrey on the set of the reality TV show 'Win in China'. He also gets unprecedented access to social activist movements in China… and accompanies a group in Beijing tasked with cracking down on public spitting, as China tries to spruce up its image prior to the Olympics.
THE CHANGING WORLD is the sister documentary series of PRI's The World. Each week, we offer American radio listeners two in-depth documentaries from the BBC World Service that probe issues critical to our understanding of our evolving world.
