Return of the Nomad
In this documentary produced for the BBC World Service, Susie Emmett travels with nomadic pastoralists in two very different parts of the world. She discovers new evidence to dispel myths that pastoralism is backward and environmentally damaging.

FIRST HALF

Susie Emmett journeys in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya with Maasai cattle herders, and in India with camel keepers in the desert state of Rajasthan. She learns why camels do not harm the environment, and how pastoralists view the land they live on.

SECOND HALF

Susie Emmett tries her hand at milking a camel, investigates the nutritional benefits of camel’s milk, and samples camel’s milk ice cream. She looks at new products and new economic opportunities for traditional pastoralists who rear their animals in some of the toughest environments on earth.
