This time on The Changing World, two aspects of freedom: A former Beirut hostage thanks the man who secured his release, and a Burmese opposition leader maintains psychological freedom while under house arrest.

British journalist John McCarthy was on his first foreign assignment in 1986 when he was seized in Beirut. He was held hostage for five years. In this documentary produced for the BBC World Service, McCarthy examines the tactics of successful hostage negotiation. He also meets, and thanks Giandomenco Picco, the U.N. negotiator who secured his own release.

Join Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the last 20 years in some form of detention under Burma's military regime. But she has declared that she is free, because she is free from fear. The BBC’s Mike Wooldridge looks at Aung San Suu Kyi’s personal story, and how she continues to inspire the Burmese people.
