Germany marked a sombre anniversary last month. On August 13, 1961, Germany's capital was physically truncated. In the East, the divider was known as the "anti-fascist protection wall." In the West, it was simply: The Wall. Gerry Northam speaks with those who remember that day, on how it changed their lives forever.

The Berlin Wall cut three of the city's sectors off from its fourth, and would stand for nearly three decades. Construction on the Berlin Wall began overnight, on a late summer weekend, 50 years ago.
