More than a million people a year are killed in traffic accidents. Most of these accidents are in the developing world. Sheena McDonald, who was struck and nearly killed by a police car a decade ago, goes to Kenya and Costa Rica to investigate how these nations are trying to fight the rising toll of traffic fatalities.

  
FIRST HALF



The U.N. has proclaimed 2011 as the start of the Decade of Action for Road Safety. The U.N. has called on member states to stabilize and eventually reduce traffic injuries and fatalities worldwide. The BBC's Sheena McDonald goes to Kenya to investigate why the death toll from traffic accidents is rising in the developing world.

SECOND HALF



Drunk driving is one of  the major causes of road deaths in Costa Rica. The government is fighting back, and has introduced new laws that are stricter than those in the U.S. and elsewhere. Sheena McDonald reports from Costa Rica, a nation that is heralded for its efforts to reduce traffic fatalities.
