  MARCHING INTO HISTORY

Protest marches are equated with social change. But how have marches themselves changed over time? Michael Goldfarb examines the past, present, and future of protest marches.

FIRST HALF

Modern political protest marching dates back to 1834, and a labor dispute in Tolpuddle, in Dorset, England. Michael Goldfarb takes us from Tolpuddle, to Mahatma Gandhi's 1934 "Salt March" to Mao Zedong's 1936 Long March in this history of marching.

SECOND HALF

We examine how the Internet has changed protesting, and whether physically gathering together is more effective than joining online protest campaigns.
