Chicago politics has a reputation for backroom deals and criminal undertones. In this documentary produced for the BBC World Service, local journalist Steve Edwards takes to the streets of his hometown. He meets with the political bosses behind the so-called "machine" that has controlled democracy there for many years, and asks why the Windy City is such a hotbed of corruption.

The BBC's Simon Pitts visits Maywood, a small working class city near Los Angeles. In an effort to avoid bankruptcy, Maywood laid off all city employees last summer, and contracted out services such as police protection. Pitts investigates the implications of this move.
